HIGH POINT, N.C. (WGHP) — The Democratic mayor of High Point has announced a run for U.S. Congress.
On Tuesday evening, High Point Mayor Cyril Jefferson posted on his Facebook page that he was officially running for North Carolina’s 6th District in Congress.
“North Carolinians are ready for real solutions — not more noise or gridlock. I’m stepping forward because I believe in the power of public service, in listening first, and in delivering results that improve everyday lives,” Jefferson said in his Facebook post, along with an attached video. “From housing and healthcare to jobs, education, and public safety—we have work to do. And I’m ready.”
Republican Addison McDowell, who received President Donald Trump’s endorsement during a contentious primary, currently holds the seat.
“Cyril has a better chance of winning the lottery than convincing the 6th district to vote for a woke, far left politician who raises taxes on middle-class families,” McDowell told FOX8 in response to Jefferson’s candidacy announcement.
The seat was previously held by Kathy Manning, a Democrat, who opted not to run again due to concerns about redistricting. The Democrats did not have an official candidate on the ballot for District 6 in 2024.
Jefferson was elected as mayor in 2023 after serving on the city council.
District 6 encompasses parts of Guilford and Forsyth Counties, as well as Rowan, Davidson and Davie.
