GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — Red light cameras have been a hot topic ever since the City of Greensboro did away with them 20 years ago.
Now, they’re coming back.
On Tuesday night, Greensboro city leaders said yes to bringing them back.
“I actually supported it the first time I was on council way back when, when we brought the red light cameras on, and I voted on it then for safety, and I’m going to vote on it again for safety,” Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan said.
Greensboro shut down its red light camera program in 2005 after a court decision said the city must give 90% of its revenue from the program to Guilford County Schools, leaving 10% to the city, which many thought was unbeneficial.
Now that the city is voting yes to try it again, some drivers say it will be good to have them back.
“I think that if there are consequences for things that are unsafe, yes. If not, it’s just an expenditure that will do nothing,” said Dustin Keene, a Greensboro business owner.
While others don’t agree.
“I never been a fan of it because … if I go to Raleigh, I know they got those lights and … if it’s a red light late notice, you’re going to pass it because you don’t want to either mess up your brakes or … you don’t want to risk anything,” said Alex Sanchez, a Greensboro resident and driver.
One driver even said he is split on this decision.
“It’s just an even easier way to watch you do things you’re not supposed to do. So … it kind of just varies … I get it as far as some of the safety aspects … Everybody’s not perfect … I really don’t mind … I’m going to make sure I’m just not doing some crazy stuff,” said Greensboro Resident Quonel Scott.
A spokesperson for the city did not share which intersections will receive red light cameras for this project but did say they anticipate starting up at the end of this year.
