Granite Bears blow out Sauras, 59-0

Friday’s Northwest 1A Conference bout between South Stokes and Mount Airy reached a running clock by the start of the second half.

A near-flawless performance by the Bears gave the home team a 52-0 lead after two quarters. Mount Airy tacked on one more TD in the fourth quarter to round out the 59-0 conference win.

“Proud of our guys’ effort and how they played tonight,” said Mount Airy coach J.K. Adkins. “A lot of guys are contributing and playing good minutes. Over the last three games we have seen improvement across the board, but our toughest competition is yet to come.”

The win moves the Bears to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. South Stokes drops to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in NW1A competition.

Mount Airy executed a balanced attack to earn its 331 total yards. Senior quarterback Holden Poindexter went a perfect 5-for-5 passing for 200 yards and three touchdowns. His 200-yard performance moved Poindexter into the No. 1 spot of Mount Airy’s all-time passing list.

Poindexter broke a 52-year-old school record set by Bill Wall in 1969.

“Holden is such a great young man and player,” Adkins said. “He’s been through adverse situations and come out on the other side stronger and better. He has worked hard and deserves everything that he has accomplished. So proud of him.”

In addition to the passing game, which saw Poindexter connect with Zeb Stroup and Dalton Nance for three TDs, Mount Airy rushed 36 times for 131 yards and three touchdowns. Cameron Moore carried the load in the first half with 11 rushes for 66 yards and TD, while Nathan Nance and Nazrel Bell split duties in the second half with a combined 14 rushes for 65 yards and two TDs.

The third rushing TD came from Stroup on a QB-keeper in the fourth quarter.

The Sauras were held to 41 total yards in the game, and all 41 came on the ground. Arlyn Durrell led the way with 14 carries for 14 yards, followed by Jordan Mitchell with six carries for 18 yards, DJ Goolsby with three carries for five yards and Johnny Dotson with one carry for six yards.

Quarterback Tyler Patterson rushed twice for a loss of two yards. Patterson also attempted six passes, but didn’t complete any. The QB was also picked off twice.

Mount Airy’s defense limited South throughout the game. The Sauras were held to just two first downs Friday night and turned the ball over three times.

The first South turnover came on the Sauras’ opening play from scrimmage. Mount Airy’s Reece Deaton recovered the ball, eventually leading to 4-yard touchdown run by Cameron Moore. The Bears converted the 2-point conversion to go up 8-0.

The Sauras fumbled again on their first play of the ensuing drive, but it was recovered by Patterson. South was pushed deep into its own territory before having a punt blocked out of the end zone for a safety.

Then began a series of unfortunate events for the Sauras. Poindexter connected with Zeb Stroup on the first play of the drive to score a 46-yard touchdown, after which Dylan Tilley made his first of seven PATs. After a South Stokes three-and-out, Poindexter found Stroup again for another TD.

The Sauras were picked off on second-and-12 during the next drive. Payton Fonville ran the interception back 25 yards for a TD.

Both of South Stokes’ first downs came on the next drive. Durrell picked up 10 yards on a second down run to move the chains for the first time. The Sauras then took advantage of an encroachment penalty on Mount Airy to set Mitchell up for a short gain.

South ended the first quarter just outside of Bear territory, but wouldn’t advance any further. A deep shot by Patterson was picked off by William Mayfield. Then, Poindexter found Dalton Nance for an 80-yard TD.

Mount Airy scored on its next two drives, while holding South to a pair of three-and-outs before halftime. The first of these Mount Airy TDs was a 50-yard punt returned for a TD by Dalton Nance. The second was a 1-yard TD run by Nathan Nance.

A running clock in the second half sped the game up. Each team punted twice before Stroup ran in an 8-yard TD midway through the fourth quarter.

South Stokes looks to break a two-game losing streak by hosting Bishop McGuinness (1-3) on March 26. The Bears can win their third-straight game against Winston-Salem Prep (3-1) next Friday.
