MILLERS CREEK — The Surry Central wrestling team captured its fourth-consecutive conference championship and conference tournament championship in the span of 24 hours.
The Golden Eagles won the Foothills 2A Conference Regular Season Title by going 15-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference, last defeating East Surry on January 25. Then on January 26, Surry Central traveled to West Wilkes for the FH2A Conference Tournament.
Surry Central won the team competition by finishing in the top four in 12-of-14 brackets. West Wilkes finished second in the conference tournament, followed by North Surry in third, North Wilkes in fourth, East Surry in fifth, Forbush in sixth and Wilkes Central in seventh.
Like the Four Horsemen of Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling in the 1980s and 90s – Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson and Ole Anderson – a quartet of Golden Eagle wrestlers came away from the conference meet draped in gold: Karson Crouse, Spencer LeClair, Jeremiah Price and Jacob Price. The four Surry Central wrestlers left the conference championship with a combined record of 109-7.
Two-time state champion Jeremiah Price was named FH2A Wrestler of the Year by finishing 35-0. Jacob Price was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Conference Tournament, and Eagles coach Stephen Priddy was named Conference Coach of the Year.
East Surry had one conference champion, junior Eli Becker, as well as two silver medalists, one bronze medalist and three wrestlers finish fourth.
North Surry did not have an individual conference champion, but the Greyhounds did have three second-place finishers, five third-place finishers and one fourth-place finisher.
East Surry
Becker won the 182 bracket and never had to wrestle past the first period. After a first-round BYE, Becker pinned Wilkes Central’s Javien Chatham in the semifinals and did the same against North Surry’s Adam Slate in the championship.
Trace Tilley and Daniel Villasenor reached the championship match of their respective weight classes. Tilley pinned North Surry’s Mason Hicks in the quarterfinals of the 160 bracket, then pinned Wilkes Central’s Erik Lomeli in the semifinals before falling to Surry Central’s Crouse in the championship.
Villasenor topped West Wilkes’ Jocelyn Paredes in the quarterfinals of the 195 bracket, then defeated North Surry’s Jase Hernandez via 2-1 decision in the semifinals. Villasenor was defeated by Forbush’s Luke Hurley in the championship match.
Lucas East was defeated by Surry Central’s Enoch Lopez in the semifinals of the 220 bracket, but earned a third-place finish by pinning Wilkes Central’s Joey Jarvis and Forbush’s Regan Ramey in the consolation bracket.
Troy Haywood (138), Corbin East (152) and Braden Snow (170) all finished fourth in their respective brackets.
North Surry
North Surry’s Caleb Utt was the first Greyhound to compete for a championship. Utt topped East Surry’s Chad Chilton in the quarterfinals of the 126 bracket, then pinned Surry Central’s Alex Kinton in the semifinals before falling to Wilkes Central’s Tyler Holland in the championship.
Garrett Shore met Surry Central’s LeClair in the championship match of the 170 bracket. Shore reached the finals with a first-round BYE and a semifinal win over North Wilkes’ Mason Dancy. Shore was defeated by LeClair in the finals via 7-0 decision.
The final North Surry wrestler to compete for a conference title was Adam Slate. Slate picked up a first-round BYE in the 182 bracket, then outlasted Surry Central’s Cole Butcher via 8-3 decision in the semifinals. Slate was defeated by East Surry’s Becker in the finals.
Isaac Tate was defeated by Surry Central’s Ayden Norman in the 106 semifinals, before going on to defeat West Wilkes’ Jacob Bray in the consolation finals.
Will Brickell lost to the eventual 120 champion, Benjamin South of North Wilkes, in the quarterfinals. Brickell battled back to beat Wilkes Central’s Devon Bowlin and Surry Central’s Landon Pack in the consolation bracket.
William France was defeated by the eventual 138 champion in the semifinals of his bracket. France went over West Wilkes’ Tanner Esters and East Surry’s Troy Haywood to finish third.
Jase Hernandez finished third in the 195 bracket after suffering his first loss of the season to East Surry’s Villasenor. Hernandez got to the podium by beating Wilkes Central’s Joshua Camilo and Surry Central’s Colby Cruise in the consolation bracket.
Ty Gwyn won his quarterfinal match in the 285 bracket, but lost in the semifinals. Gwyn defeated East Surry’s Charles Summers and Wilkes Central’s Ray-Kwan Hayes in the consolation bracket to finish third in the heavyweight division.
Austin Goins finished fourth in the 132 bracket.
Surry Central
The Golden Eagles had four conference champions, three runners-up, two third-place finishers and three fourth-place finishers.
Jacob Price started the Four Horseman’s path of destruction in the 145 bracket. The sophomore Price defeated East Surry’s Charlie Cummings and North Wilkes’ Dawson Faw via first-period falls to reach the championship. Jacob then pinned West Wilkes’ Holt Hanchey in 50 seconds to win the conference title.
Jeremiah Price was up next in the 152 bracket. Like Jacob, he never wrestled past the first period. Jeremiah pinned North Surry’s Andrew Fletcher in 15 seconds in the semifinals, then pinned Wilkes Central’s Elijah Hendren in 48 seconds to win the championship.
Karson Crouse earned a first-round BYE in the 160 bracket to set up a match against West Wilkes’ Omar Limon in the semis. Crouse led 13-0 in the third period before Limon scored his first point. The Golden Eagle senior led 14-3 before pinning Limon.
Crouse went on to face East Surry’s Tilley in the championship. Crouse led 2-0 when he pinned Tilley in 1:55.
Spencer LeClair had a first-round BYE in the 170 bracket, then defeated East Surry’s Braden Snow via 8-3 decision in the semifinals. LeClair ran into North Surry’s Garrett Shore in the championship and won via 7-0 decision.
Surry Central’s Ayden Norman reached the 106 championship. He earned a first-round BYE, then defeated North Surry’s Issac Tate via 8-6 decision in the semifinals. Norman fell to Forbush’s Drake Parker in the championship.
Wyatt Wall made it to the 138 championship with a first-round BYE and a 13-5 major decision victory over East Surry’s Troy Haywood. Wall trailed 11-0 when he scored a takedown and a near fall in the third period, but ran out of time against North Wilkes’ Alexander Ball.
The final Golden Eagle to reach the championship round was Enoch Lopez. Lopez pinned North Surry’s Joseph Ravitt in the quarterfinals of the 220 bracket, then pinned East Surry’s Lucas East in the semifinals. Lopez was defeated by West Wilkes’ Gary Call in the finals.
Alex Kinton and Cole Butcher won third place in their respective brackets. Kinton fell to North Surry’s Caleb Utt in the 126 semifinals, but defeated West Wilkes’ D.J. Ferko in the consolation finals. Butcher was defeated by North Surry’s Adam Slate in the 182 semis, then won a bronze medal with victories over North Wilkes’ Gabriel Brandon and Wilkes Central’s Javien Chatham.
Xavier Salazar (113), Landon Pack (120) and Colby Cruise (195) all finished fourth in their respective brackets.
