Free business seminars set in March

DOBSON – Surry Community College’s Small Business Center will be holding several free seminars in March designed to benefit entrepreneurs and small business owners. Walk-ins are welcomed, but online registration is encouraged for all seminars.

Using Social Media to Find Your Customers will be held on Thursday, March 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room YA 216/217, The Yadkin Center, 1001 College Drive, Yadkinville. Customers are the key to building a successful business, and an online reputation is crucial for finding customers. This fast-paced class teaches participants where and how to find customers. Students will learn how to get an online reputation report and which SEO keywords their competitors are using, all for free.

Participants will briefly compare traditional methods of marketing to the more current methods of social media. Students will quickly learn how to find, motivate, and keep consumers coming to your business. Discover the variety of free market research tools that will give critical information about an industry and customers including Google AdWords, Facebook ads, LinkedIn, Free Lunch, Twitter ads, mPact, Pinterest, YouTube, and Survey Monkey. The speaker will be Nick Hawks.

Marketing Your Small Business will take place on Tuesday, March 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room YA-116, The Yadkin Center in Yadkinville. Marketing for the 21st Century small business is more dynamic and challenging than ever. Participants will discover how to most effectively and efficiently use the many marketing tools available, gain insights to understand and reach customers, analyze industry and business environment and differentiate between branding, advertising, and grassroots marketing techniques. Students will explore the components of an effective marketing plan in this comprehensive seminar. The speaker will be Ruben Gonzales.

Facebook Shop and Facebook Marketplace will be presented on Thursday, March 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 121, The Center for Public Safety, 1220 State St., Mount Airy. Facebook is the largest social network in the world, with more than 1.1 billion people logging in daily to spend an average of 58.5 minutes on the platform. Facebook Marketplace is an easy, convenient way to market a small business and sell in the local area. Customers can look through listings or search for items near them to find great things to buy. Business owners can list items for free and find new customers directly within Facebook and reach thousands of people in the local community and increase sales. The speaker will be Nick Hawks.

How to Write a Business Plan will be offered on Tuesday, March 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 121, The Center for Public Safety in Mount Airy. A business plan can be the most important tool a small business owner has. Participants will learn how to turn your ideas into a solid plan for financing and long-term success. This seminar teaches the important components of a business plan and helps students lay the foundation for a winning plan. Participants will find out how marketing, operations, and finance are interrelated, discover how a business plan is used by potential lenders, the dos and don’ts of writing a plan and steps for making the process easy. This seminar is designed for new and established business owners. The speaker will be Ruben Gonzales.

3 Cs of SBA (Small Business Administration) will be presented on Thursday, March 26 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Room 107, The Pilot Center, 612 East Main St., Pilot Mountain in a seminar called Counseling, Capital & Contracting of the SBA, an agency which plays an important role in helping to spur innovation and strengthen the nation’s competitiveness by providing access to capital, federal contract opportunities, and counseling and training programs. This workshop will highlight the many federal programs the SBA has to help people start and grow a successful business. Participants will learn the difference between 7(a) and 504, HUBZone and the HUB program, and SCORE, which is the nation’s largest network of volunteer expert business mentors. The speaker will be Eileen Joyce, MBA; Lead Economic Development Specialist, of the SBA.
