Former Californians open Mexican-Cuban restaurant in Vermont

(NEXSTAR) — California native Joel Nevarez, and his wife Jessica, moved to Vermont three years ago. But if you told him then, he’d end up running a successful Mexican-Cuban eatery, he probably wouldn’t believe you.

“We moved out here just for a slower pace from the California hustle,” Nevarez said. “We had jobs out here, like normal regular people.”

It wasn’t until a family emergency happened that they decided to chart a different course

Armed with family recipes from Joel’s Mexican and Jessica’s Cuban heritage, the two opened Mexi-Cuban Cravings.

“We were missing our California food truck days, the taco stands, the taco shops. There’s just no flavors like it, so we went for it,” Nevarez said.

As expected, there were a bit of growing pains. Their first menu was over three pages long, but they didn’t have the space to make all of that food.

They’ve since trimmed down the menu and added some of their own flair to their recipes.

Now, Nevarez said people can’t get enough, with certain items selling out daily, including his favorite, the birria tacos.

“We have customers calling like, ‘Do you still have some?'” Nevarez said with a laugh. “We get here early start making all the sides, they have to sit there and cook. The steaks I barbecue every morning.”

With his hard work paying off, Nevarez said he and his wife are excited to continue sharing the taste of home with their community.

“This is what we’ve been missing. This is what I miss when I was a kid growing up with my mom,” Nevarez said.
