FBI investigating death of teenager on Carnival cruise

(NEXSTAR) – The passenger who died aboard a Carnival cruise ship has been identified by her family as 18-year-old Anna Kepner.

The high school senior was traveling with her family on the Carnival Horizon, a ship that holds nearly 4,000 people and sails to the Caribbean. The ship returned to Miami on Saturday as planned, the company said.

The FBI is investigating Kepner’s death and hasn’t released any further information.

Kepner was from Titusville, Florida, her family confirmed. They told ABC News that she was set to graduate from high school in the spring and was planning to join the military after graduation.

“When she walked into a room, she would light it up,” the family said. “If you were sad, she’d make you laugh. She would joke around and be the funniest little person in school.”

“You were a bright, kind-hearted young woman whose presence brought warmth and energy into the classroom,” a teacher at Temple Christian School posted on Facebook in her memory. “Your curiosity, your gentle spirit, and the way you cared for those around you made a lasting impression on me and on everyone who knew you.”

Carnival Cruise Line said it was working with the FBI Miami office to investigate the incident.

“Our focus is on supporting the family of our guest and cooperating with the FBI,” the company said in a statement.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
