An early morning accident in the city involving a single car left a man dead.
According to authorities, a passenger car struck a power pole on Pine Street just west of the downtown area.
Dale Harold was appointed interim medical examiner earlier this week to replace the late John Shelton. He said 9-1-1 received a call about a accident at 5:03 a.m.
Responding to the call was the Surry County Emergency Medical Services, which also has a new interim director as David Speight has taken over that part of Shelton’s roles.
Also responding were the Mount Airy Police Department and the Mount Airy Fire Department, with assistance from volunteers with the Mount Airy Rescue Squad.
On the scene, emergency personnel found a single occupant — a male who was deceased, necessitating a call for the medical examiner. Harold said he could not reveal details on the driver as the immediate family had not been reached yet.
The crashed vehicle was located at about 334 W. Pine St., about 400 feet west of Moody Funeral Services and a couple hundred feet east of where a fire destroyed a home last Fourth of July.
On that holiday, dozens of fire personnel responded to an early-morning call of reported flames on the front porch of a house at 359 W. Pine St. The fire quickly spread through the structure that was in the middle of a remodeling.
