MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — A 35-year-old man is being held without bond in the Horry County jail after a bomb threat Sunday evening at Myrtle Beach International Airport led to authorities searching several aircraft, police said.
Christopher Ronald Newman was arrested on Wednesday and booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a charge of threatening to kill, injure or intimidate an individual or damage or destroy property with a bomb.
According to an Horry County police report, a male caller whose “voice appeared to be electronically manipulated” said “B5 will blow up in 10 minutes.”
Authorities immediately searched the airport’s B terminal, where three planes were located, the report said. An Avelo Airlines plane at Gate 3 was already loaded and had pushed away from the gate; a Southwest Airlines plane was empty at Gate 4; and an Allegiant Air plane was loaded at Gate 5 and still connected to the jet bridge. In addition, a Breeze Airways plane was pushed back from at Gate 4 in Terminal A.
Each pilot was contacted and told about a “non-verifiable bomb threat” and offered the option to deplane and have their aircraft search by an HCPD K-9, the report said. All of the pilots returned their planes to their respective gates, and they were searched after passengers were deplaned and moved to a “controlled” area by police.
