Alamance County middle school teacher charged after shoving students, document say

BURLINGTON, N.C. (WGHP) — A teacher has been charged after an alleged assault at a Piedmont Triad middle school.

According to Burlington Police Department, on Dec. 12 they received a report that Derek Tang, 50, a teacher at Turrentine Middle School, had “physically assaulted a student on school property.”

Warrants allege that Tang grabbed a 14-year-old student and shoved them through a doorway into the hall of the school.

Police investigated the incident and charged Tang with one count of simple assault. They believe this was an “isolated incident” with no other students involved.

“As soon as this information was reported to Alamance-Burlington School staff, it was immediately reported to the Burlington Police Department,” the police said, adding that the school district was cooperating with the police.

Tang was arrested Monday and given a $1,500 secured bond.

The school district has been reached for comment.
