Alamance County brothers turn to football after hardship

ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — When floodwater swept through Alamance County this past July, it left nothing but devastation. For brothers Nick and Cole Saunders, it washed away years of family memories, forcing them to restart their lives and pick up the pieces of their home.

“I was questioning myself,” Cole said. “Why is this happening to me? What did I do to deserve this?”

Instead of backing away through the heartbreak of almost losing a home, the brothers showed up… to football practice every day, ready to put in the work.

Head Coach Tony Aguilar said, “They didn’t make any excuses. They could have stayed at home and felt sorry for themselves, but they’re workers. They’re just great kids that found a way to come work with their team.”

Many in the community are still recovering from the flood, the Saunders family included. But on the field, the brothers have found more than a team. They found their second home.

“We had teammates, a couple coaches, principals, and our AD come help us,” Nick said. “It showed that people actually cared. Nobody really cared for themselves when they were down here. They were truly there to help us.”

Through loss, Nick and Cole gained a brotherhood that runs far deeper than the game.
