DOBSON– Alexia Hayes says without receiving help on writing papers from Surry Community College’s Academic Support Center that she would in trouble academically.
“I knew I needed to do better with writing papers. I would have been failing without the help of the Academic Support Center,” she said. “They have taught me how to think about how the reader perceives and understands what I have written.”
Hayes has worked with tutor Jesse Cockerham and peer tutors Will Miller and Allie Wright.
“I do what I can at home, and then they review it,” she said. “They have taught me how to brainstorm, create an outline, stay on topic, be unbiased, keep the correct tense, and write professionally and cite sources using APA or MLA.”
On many Mondays and Wednesdays last semester, Hayes could be found in the Academic Support Center’s Writing Lab receiving assistance at what she said was an awesome price tag – absolutely free – a benefit of being a Surry Community College student.
“It seems like a service that is too good to be true, but it’s for real,” said Alan Unsworth, Academic Support Center director. “We work with students to get the assistance they need, so they can be successful in their classes.”
Hayes is taking classes to earn an associate in arts degree at Surry Community College with plans to graduate in 2020.
“I am making straight Bs, and now I am hoping for As,” Hayes said. “It’s been such a relief. I would recommend other students come to the Academic Support Center for help. The tutors will work with you at your own pace. You need to be diligent, listen to their advice, and keep an open mind. When you walk in the door, you will feel comfortable. I felt shameful at first because I needed the help, but the Academic Support Center staff will put you at ease.”
The Academic Support Center offers one-time tutoring sessions to help students with reading and writing assignments in any subject, and tutors will also work with students at regularly scheduled sessions throughout the semester. Online tutoring is available around the clock; students should logon to tutor.com through their Moodle classroom. All of the services are free to current students.
To schedule a tutoring appointment, stop by the Academic Support Center on the Dobson campus, R-212 (top floor of the Library), call 336-386-3260 or email asc@surry.edu. Group study sessions are also offered with no appointment needed; a list of these group study sessions can be located online library.surry.edu/ASC.
