A new flame for candles made in North Carolina

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — Every business goes through changes from time to time.  But a candle maker in the Piedmont is now thriving after a big change. Brad Jones found out more about The Lighthouse Candle Factory, and why customers are glad that a new owner stepped in at the right time so they can enjoy their favorites that are Made in North Carolina.

Candles can remind people of great memories and happy times. Rebecca Overman knew that all too well; she was a longtime customer at The Lighthouse Candle Factory in Kernersville.

Several years ago, she heard that the owner had passed away and stopped by to purchase some of her favorites. Then, she asked if they had thought about selling the business instead of closing it.

Within a week, they had worked out the details and she was the new owner.  Her entire family joined in to relaunch the business by learning from the recipes and notes left behind by the former owner, Betty Burger.

Betty had created all of the scents as well as the blend of wax that made their candles different from anything else on the market. They learned from customers that they had passed the most important test.

“They say the candles are just as good as what Betty made”, according to Rebecca’s father Rodney, who adds, “Everything we do, we ask ourselves, would Betty be proud of this?  And if the answer is no, we don’t do it”.

Lighthouse offers 80 varieties of candles in a glass container, or they can pour ones into a container supplied by the customer. They also have ones with a theme suitable for firefighters, law enforcement, EMS and the military, or ones that carry a team logo, which has turned out to be a popular fundraiser for local schools.

“These are handmade”, Rebecca told us, adding that “we babysit the candle for about 30 hours over the course of two days. We hand place our wicks … there’s a lot of love that goes into it and that’s why they’re so good”.

They’ve now shipped candles to 28 states and are coming out with new products all the time.  But they are still thankful to the lady who started it all.

Rebecca says, “I have to give all the credit to Miss Betty.  She came up with the recipe.  She’s the reason these candles work and last forever, and why I was a customer for 20 something years!”  Now, with a new owner at the helm, The Lighthouse Candle Factory is ready to keep that legacy going to many years to come.
