CAPE LOOKOUT, N.C. (WAVY) — A 55-foot trawler that’s been out of service for about a decade is serving a new purpose — as an artificial reef.
The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Marine Fisheries’ Artificial Reef Program sank the trawler FV Alexandria Dawn off Cape Lookout, last month.
Before sinking the vessel, it was cleaned in accordance with EPA requirements.
The Alexandria Dawn is located at 34° 16.653’N, 76° 38.651’W. The site is approximately 28 nautical miles south of Beaufort Inlet, in 105 feet of water and is a popular site for fishermen and divers.
The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries has been helping build artificial reefs for the public for more than 75 years. Artificial reefs serve an important purpose. They help promote marine life by serving as a crucial spawning and foraging habitat for many commercially and recreationally important fish species.
