Three Surry County Schools — Pilot Mountain Elementary, Pilot Mountain Middle, and East Surry High School — were put under a shelter-in-place order around 9 a.m. today because of “suspicious activity” nearby.
“This morning, May 6, while the Armfield Parks staff was mowing they detected suspicious activity in the park that resulted in an immediate call to the Surry County Sheriff’s Office,” Surry County Schools spokesperson Sonia Dickerson said, without defining “suspicious activity.”
“As a precautionary measure while the events were unfolding …those three schools were put in a shelter-in-place, not a lock down. Shelter in place means they could move around in the building, but they could not go outside.”
Dickerson said the order was lifted around 1 p.m., and that the rest of the school day, including dismissal, would proceed as planned. She referred additional questions to the Surry County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials with the sheriff’s office, as well as those with the Pilot Mountain Police Department, were on the scene and not available for immediate comment.
