GREENSBORO — The N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A Track and Field Championship was held June 25 at N.C. A&T State University.
Student-athletes from Millennium Charter Academy, Mount Airy and East Surry competed in the event. The highest individual finish for Surry County athletes was fourth and was shared by Ava Utt and William Mayfield.
Millennium Charter sophomore Ava Utt finished fourth in the girls high jump. Utt’s mark of 4-08.00 feet tied with the third-place finisher, but the advantage went to her opponent due to number of attempts.
Utt’s fourth-place finish alone was enough for five team points, which tied Millennium’s girls for 27th out of 45 teams.
Mount Airy senior William Mayfield was one of three county athletes to compete in multiple events at the State Championship, and the only one to compete in four events. His highest finish of fourth place came in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.42 seconds.
